The Kaos Signing Choir

The Kaos Signing Choir for Deaf & Hearing Children is an integrated project for young people aged 4 to 18. The choir has wowed audiences at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, London’s Barbican Centre and St. Paul’s Cathedral, has performed many times on national TV, and recently reached a global audience when it sang and signed the National Anthem at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Since the choir began, we’ve had some amazing experiences. We’ve won the Under-18’s Choir Class at the North London Festival of Music and Drama. We’ve performed separately for the Queen, Princess Anne and Anita Dobson (well she’s royalty to us). We have been featured on BBC2’s ‘See Hear’, Radio 3’s ‘The Choir’ and BBC 1’s ‘One O’Clock Show’. We’ve also performed at the International Youth Arts Festival and at Alexandra Palace with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir.

The highlight, though, was singing and signing at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics! After that, the choir was asked to welcome Paralympians from the French and Belgian teams at St. Pancras and also to sing at the Opening Service for the 2012 Paralympics.

In October 2012 we recorded a new song at Abbey Road Studios in honour of our Global Patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The song is called ‘One Earth, One Sky’ and is an expression of hope for human understanding and unity.

‘To see all those children wanting to know our language and mix with us… it made me feel proud of being Deaf’

Audience member, Royal Festival Hall

‘200 kids, all singing, all signing, all throwing themselves into the songs and beaming from ear to ear. It’s a phenomenal sight and a heavenly sound. Whether they have you sobbing or grinning, you leave with a song in your heart’

Audience member, Royal Festival Hall

“Deaf-hearing integration can sometimes be an awkward and stiff affair. But Kaos offer an imaginative template that can easily be used by schools and youth organisations everywhere”

Stephen Iliffe, National Deaf Children’s Society Magazine

“Deaf and hearing children sign and sing together and their enjoyment and enthusiasm for these sessions is fantastic. All those who listen to The Kaos Signing Choir are moved and uplifted. It’s a very special experience”

Gill Pinkerton Headteacher, Highgate Primary in partnership with Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Children
